Quote of the day

image

Revision is never fun and a little inspiration can go a long way. I was mid way through some revision when i needed some inspiration especially inspirational quotes. I found a couple of great websites but all were cluttered and dull. I was looking for something with one big quote. When i couldn’t find one i decided to make one.

Here it is. I discovered earlier BraineryQuotes have an RSS feed for their quote of the day. So i used this and a simple PHP script to get the newest element in the feed. Luckily this also counts towards my revision for PHP.

Hopefully it can inspire you too. #QuoteOfTheDay

Get your paint brushes out

I recently discovered a pretty cool site with a nice idea. Its called Selfless Portraits. The aim of the site is pretty simple, you log in with Facebook and select one of your profile pictures. The site will then provide you with some one else’s. all you have to do is to come up with your artistic impression of their picture in any style you like. once you have submitted their picture, yours will be sent to a different ‘artist’ to be drawn. Although there are some stickmen here and there most of the pictures are actually amazing. Check out their gallery. The only problem with this site is that the process of you drawing a picture and a different person drawing you picture can be very slow and up to a week.

Quick posts

It’s been a while I know. With all the assignment and applying for jobs I had to prioritize my time. Now that I have a better phone, I can now use the android WordPress app. So, I have decided to do small quick posts on the go and some pictures maybe instead of time consuming large texts.

Happy New Year

New year, new beginning, new hope…………

So one year has gone and as always it has gone so quick. 2012 has been a great year for me. Had an amazing year at UNI, meet some amazing new people and finally went back home to Sri Lanka. Hopefully 2013 will at least be as good as 2012.

BRING ON 2013!!!!!

Busy Busy Bee

Its been a while, Actually its been a long time sine a proper post. I  have been busy with group projects and looking for an internship for next year. I am so happy the software engineering group project is now over and out of the way. people who may have read my earlier post may recall me saying how much i loved it and how much i love computer science. I still stick to that but the project just took up too much of my time. In the end it was worth it, the final product was not perfect but was sufficient. I could not have done this on my own, credits have to go to my group and its members Alex PK, David Love and Devante Chambell. We had to make a software solution which will make the life’s of Social workers easier.

Finally algorithms as a module is out of my life, I can now look forward to good modules like dynamic web to improve my JavaScript skills. Next term is going to be interesting and very important as i need to find a job for next year. Hopefully i will have time to do posts.

I love Computer Science

289960_10151015245774082_458188791_o

You might say I must have loved Computer Science to do it at UNI. Well the real reason I picked Computer Science at UNI was because it was the only subject i was good at in school and ‘liked’.

This week is my project week and as such i was started working on my software engineering project. After five hours of not stop working i realised i had no music on, i was not distracted by anything and i was not bored. I loved doing the work. It may sound sad but i loved it. I decided to take a break to make dinner but had a light bulb moment and got back to work. Dinner got postponed by an hour.

If you didn’t get my message, I LOVE COMPUTER SCIENCE.

#thesrilankangeek

image

Here is a small web app i built using JavaScript for instagram. It works with the instagram api to get the last few images tagged with #thesrilankangeek and when loaded it will automatically reload when a new photo has been tagged #thesrilankangeek. It has one major bug still which is when it check for new updates it uses the api endpoint with my access token and as the instagram api documentations states only 5000 requests can be made using the access token per hour. This should not be an issue if the traffic to the site is low. If you come across the page with only text and no pictures just wait an hour and try again.

Check it out here

portfolio website done

image

Finally finished my portfolio website. check it out at www.gajalakshan.com. When making any website you always have to consider not just the demographic of a viewer but also the tool they are using.weather they are using a windows, mac or a Linux platform as well as the browser they are using. The browser is what annoys me as still around 20% of the world uses internet explorer and as most of you may know internet explorer likes to be different. That is why when building a website you need to cater for IE users. well, i didn’t so i had to spend a good hour and a half adapting my well working website on chrome Firefox and safari to work the same on IE. Come on Microsoft do something about it.

Hello world!

As this is my first blog post here I thought it may be better to first blog about me. My name is Gajalakshan Mohankumar of you didn’t know that already. It is a great name don’t get me wrong but I feel my parents didn’t think about me getting a job in Europe or anywhere in the west. Think about it if there are two equally good candidates for a job, one is named Gajalakshan and the other let’s say is called Ben. Who is more likely to get the job?

Any way back to me I was born in Jaffna, Sri Lanka on 16th of September, which was a Wednesday I believe. I went to primary school in Sri Lanka called Jaffna Hindu Primary. I went to the same school till grade 3 when my parents decided to move to the UK in 2001. I can’t really argue with that decision as if we didn’t we would have been caught up in the heart of the civil war. The reason for the civil war is too long to explain in one post do I won’t. I had an uncle in Crawley so we decided to move there and it is where my family still lives. Well that’s a little background on me, thanks for reading.
